Federal Election 2007 - Peace issues
survey The Hobart Peace Coalition sent a 1-page questionnaire on national security and peace issues to all Tasmanian candidates in the 2007 Federal election. We chose two important disarmament issues, the elimination of cluster bombs and nuclear weapons. The next two issues are the two conflicts in which Australia is now involved. Finally there is the crucial long term issue of the non-violent resolution of international conflict. Relevant, informative links on the issues of the questionnaire have been provided, for the benefit of both the candidates and voters. The survey has the support of a range of peace organisations in Tasmania, including the Medical Association for the Prevention of War (Medact, MAPW) and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). The three major parties, ALP, the Coalition and the Greens responded to the questions at the national level on behalf of all their candidates. In their documents, the Greens gave specific answers to the questions but the ALP and the Coalition provided general responses relevant to the five issues. Where possible we have extracted brief quotations that seem to represent the central points in their responses. (If these brief extracts are not representative, please let us know.) These responses are included in the Senate responses page under the lead candidate for each of those three parties. These responses are relevant to the Senate Poll in all states, and to a future Australian Government's policies and programme in international affairs. The minor party and independent candidates who responded gave specific answers to the questions and often a comment. All the responses have been presented by electorate and may be seen via the navigation bar at the top or bottom of this page. There is a Tasmanian summary of the specific responses. The Peace Coalition sincerely appreciates the time, thought and effort given by the candidates and the parties to respond to this survey. We hope that the information in these important national security and peace issues will help Australian voters on 24 November.
